Why Your Skin Changes in Summer — And How to Adjust Your Routine
Share
If your skin has been acting differently lately — breaking out more, feeling oilier, or looking dull despite doing everything "right" — your routine might not be the problem. The season might be.
Summer brings real changes to your skin's environment: higher humidity, increased UV exposure, more heat and sweat. And if your routine is still the same one you were using in January, it's probably not keeping up. Here's what changes in your skin during summer and how to adjust.
What Summer Does to Your Skin
Increased Oil Production — Heat causes your sebaceous glands to produce more oil. Add humidity into the mix and you've got a recipe for clogged pores, breakouts, and that persistent midday shine — even if your skin isn't typically oily. If you're acne-prone, summer can be a particularly frustrating time without the right routine adjustments.
More UV Exposure — Longer days and more time spent outdoors means more cumulative UV exposure — even on cloudy days and even through car windows. UV is the number one driver of hyperpigmentation, premature aging, and uneven skin tone. Summer is when your SPF routine matters most.
Dehydration (Yes, Even in Humidity) — This one surprises people. Heat and sweating actually pull moisture from the skin, and air conditioning — which most of us spend all day in — is incredibly drying. Your skin can be producing excess oil and still be dehydrated at the same time. Oil is sebum; hydration is water content. They're two different things.
Sweat and Breakouts — Sweat itself doesn't cause acne, but when it mixes with bacteria, sunscreen, or makeup and sits on the skin, it can clog pores and trigger breakouts. Cleansing promptly after sweating makes a real difference.
How to Adjust Your Summer Skincare Routine
Swap to a Lighter Moisturizer — If you've been using a rich cream all winter, summer is a great time to switch to a lightweight gel or fluid moisturizer. Your skin still needs hydration — but a heavy cream on top of heat-induced oil production is often too much. Look for oil-free, non-comedogenic formulas with hyaluronic acid.
Upgrade Your SPF Game — If you're not already using SPF 30 or higher every single day, summer is the time to start. Reapply every 2 hours if you're outdoors, don't forget your neck and chest, and consider mineral SPF (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) if you have acne-prone or sensitive skin.
Cleanse More Thoroughly (But Not More Aggressively) — You may need to cleanse more diligently in summer, but that doesn't mean reaching for a harsh, stripping cleanser. Over-cleansing damages your skin barrier and can trigger even more oil production. A gentle, effective cleanser used consistently is the goal.
Consider Double Cleansing at Night — If you're wearing SPF and makeup during the day, double cleansing at night ensures you're fully removing everything before bed. An oil-based cleanser first, followed by your regular cleanser.
Ease Up on Heavy Actives — Retinol and strong acids make skin more photosensitive. If you're spending a lot of time outdoors, use retinol less frequently in summer or shift it strictly to nighttime use. Always follow with SPF the next morning.
Signs Your Routine Needs Adjusting
- You're breaking out more than usual despite no other changes
- Your skin looks shiny or feels congested by midday
- You're getting more dark spots or existing pigmentation is getting darker
- Your skin feels tight even though it looks oily
- Your usual moisturizer feels heavy or pills under SPF
Any of these is a signal that your summer skin needs a different approach.
Professional Treatments to Consider This Summer
Summer is a great time to stay consistent with professional facials to keep congestion from building up. We do recommend avoiding more aggressive chemical peels during peak summer months if you're spending a lot of time in the sun. HydraFacials are a wonderful summer treatment — they deeply cleanse, hydrate, and refresh the skin without the downtime or sun-sensitivity concerns of a peel.
