What to Expect at Your First Professional Facial

What to Expect at Your First Professional Facial

Booking your first professional facial can feel a little intimidating — especially if you're not sure what's going to happen once you're in that treatment chair. Will it hurt? Will your skin freak out afterward? What if you have a lot of breakouts right now?

We hear these questions all the time at Baby Face Skin Bar, and we want to put your mind at ease. Your first facial should feel like a treat, not a source of anxiety. Here's exactly what to expect from start to finish.

Before Your Appointment

You don't need to do anything special to prepare for your first facial, but a few things will help you get the most out of it:

  • Come with a clean face if possible — or skip heavy makeup so your esthetician can assess your skin more easily
  • Avoid aggressive exfoliation (scrubs, retinol, acids) for 2–3 days before your appointment
  • Be ready to talk about your skin — your concerns, what products you're currently using, any sensitivities or reactions you've had

The more information you share upfront, the better we can customize your treatment.

The Consultation

Every facial at Baby Face Skin Bar begins with a skin consultation. This isn't just small talk — it's how we figure out exactly what your skin needs that day.

We'll ask about your skin concerns, your current routine, lifestyle factors like stress and sleep, and any products or ingredients you've reacted to in the past. We'll also take a close look at your skin under magnification to assess things like hydration levels, congestion, and sensitivity.

This step is what separates a truly customized facial from a generic one-size-fits-all treatment.

The Treatment Itself

Once we know what your skin needs, the facial begins. Every treatment is a little different, but most professional facials include some combination of these steps:

Cleansing — We start with a thorough, professional cleanse to remove any surface buildup, oil, and impurities. This is more thorough than what you can do at home and sets the foundation for everything that follows.

Exfoliation — Dead skin cells are removed through either physical exfoliation, a chemical exfoliant (like an enzyme or mild acid), or both. This step brightens the skin immediately and allows the rest of the treatment to absorb more effectively.

Steam — Warm steam is applied to soften the skin and open the pores, making extractions safer and more effective.

Extractions — This is the step people are most nervous about — and the most misunderstood. Professional extractions remove blackheads, whiteheads, and congestion from pores safely and correctly. Done by a trained esthetician, extractions should be uncomfortable at most — not painful. Attempting these at home without training is one of the leading causes of acne scarring, which is why leaving this step to a professional matters.

Treatment Mask — A customized mask is applied based on your skin's needs — hydrating, clarifying, calming, or brightening depending on what we assessed in your consultation.

Serums & Moisturizer — We finish with targeted serums and a moisturizer suited to your skin type, locking in all the benefits of the treatment.

SPF — We always finish the morning or midday facial with SPF. After exfoliation, your skin is more sensitive to UV exposure — protection is non-negotiable.

How Will Your Skin Look and Feel Afterward?

Most clients leave their first facial with skin that looks and feels noticeably softer, brighter, and more hydrated. Some clients experience mild redness for a few hours after — this is completely normal, especially if extractions were performed.

In some cases, particularly for clients with congested or acne-prone skin, a small amount of purging (new breakouts) may occur in the days following a facial. This is your skin clearing out deeper congestion that was brought to the surface during the treatment. It's temporary and a sign the facial did its job.

What to Do After Your Facial

To protect your results:

  • Avoid heavy makeup for at least 12–24 hours
  • Skip intense workouts the day of your facial (sweat can irritate freshly treated skin)
  • Don't use retinol or strong acids for 2–3 days post-treatment
  • Wear SPF every day — this is always the rule, but especially after exfoliation
  • Drink plenty of water to support your skin's hydration from the inside

How Often Should You Get a Facial?

We recommend most clients come in every 4–6 weeks — this aligns with the skin's natural cell turnover cycle and allows you to maintain results consistently. That said, your first few facials may be spaced closer together if you're addressing a specific concern like acne or hyperpigmentation.

You're Going to Love It

First-time facial clients almost always leave wondering why they waited so long. There's something uniquely effective about having a trained professional assess and treat your skin in person — no algorithm or quiz can replicate it.

If you're ready to book your first facial in Cincinnati or Northern Kentucky, we'd love to be your esthetician.
