How to Build a Skincare Routine for Your Skin Type

Skincare products for different skin types arranged on clean white shelves

One of the most common questions we hear at Baby Face Skin Bar is: "What skincare routine should I be using?" And while we wish there was one universal answer, the truth is that it depends entirely on your skin type.

Using the wrong products for your skin type can make things worse, not better. Dry skin needs different ingredients than oily skin. Sensitive skin needs a completely different approach than acne-prone skin. The good news? Once you know your skin type and what it needs, building a routine becomes a lot more straightforward.

Here's a breakdown to get you started.

Step 1: Identify Your Skin Type

Before buying a single product, you need to know what you're working with. Here are the most common skin types:

  • Normal — Balanced, not too oily or dry, minimal sensitivity
  • Dry — Feels tight, may flake, lacks moisture and natural oil
  • Oily — Shiny throughout the day, enlarged pores, prone to breakouts
  • Combination — Oily in the T-zone (forehead, nose, chin), dry or normal on the cheeks
  • Sensitive — Easily irritated, reacts to new products, may experience redness or burning

A simple way to assess: wash your face with a gentle cleanser, pat dry, and wait 30 minutes without applying anything. How your skin feels and looks after that time tells you a lot about your skin type.

Step 2: The Non-Negotiable Basics

No matter your skin type, every routine needs three core steps:

1. Cleanse

Cleansing removes dirt, oil, makeup, and environmental pollutants that build up throughout the day. Choose a cleanser that matches your skin's needs:

  • Dry/sensitive skin: Creamy cleansers
  • Oily/acne-prone skin: Gel or foaming cleansers
  • Normal/combination: A gentle, balanced cleanser

Cleanse morning and night — but don't over-cleanse. Stripping your skin of its natural oils can trigger more oil production and irritation.

2. Moisturize

Every skin type needs moisture — yes, even oily skin. Skipping moisturizer can actually make oily skin worse because your skin overproduces oil to compensate for dehydration.

  • Dry skin: Rich creams with hyaluronic acid, ceramides, or shea butter
  • Oily/acne-prone skin: Lightweight, oil-free, non-comedogenic gels or lotions
  • Sensitive skin: Fragrance-free, minimal-ingredient formulas

3. SPF (Every. Single. Day.)

This is non-negotiable regardless of skin type, season, or whether you're staying indoors. UV damage is the #1 cause of premature aging, hyperpigmentation, and uneven skin tone. Use at least SPF 30 every morning as the last step in your routine.

Step 3: Add Targeted Treatments

Once your basics are consistent, you can layer in treatments for specific concerns:

  • Fine Lines & Aging: Retinol or retinoid at night
  • Acne & Breakouts: Mandelic acid, benzoyl peroxide
  • Dehydration: Hyaluronic acid serum applied to damp skin before moisturizer
  • Redness / Sensitivity: azelaic acid, barrier-repair creams

Important: Don't layer too many actives at once. Introduce one new product at a time, wait 2 weeks, and assess how your skin responds before adding another.

Step 4: Don't Skip Professional Support

Even the best at-home routine has limits. Professional facials, chemical peels, and treatments like HydraFacials can address issues that products alone can't, like deep congestion, textural irregularities, and stubborn pigmentation.

We recommend our clients come in for a professional treatment every 4–6 weeks to maintain results and adjust their routine as their skin changes with the seasons, hormones, and age.

A Note on Product Overload

More is not always better. In fact, one of the most common mistakes we see is clients using too many products, too many actives, and overwhelming their skin. A simple, consistent routine almost always outperforms a complicated 10-step process.

Start with the basics, master them, then build from there.
